IOT Security Ecosystem

The success of IOT Security Ecosystem (IOTSE) is like any other system.  Proper design, planned implementation, user adoption and training and change management and continuous monitoring and upgrade is key for the success.   The IOTSE Manager along with the component stakeholders play an important role in its success.

IOT Security Ecosystem should be a foundation enabler at the design stage itself.  The fact is that at the development of IOT devices, there is a lack of focus on security.  So the main problem to solve is the security at the device or the ‘thing’ level.  The limited size and computing power of the devices are a deterrent to building security features.   The hardware problem will continue to prevail for sometimes, the chip manufacturer might not find profitability in making low cost chips loaded with high end features including security.  So an ecosystem approach is the solution for implementing a contiguous security solution rather than at a device level.  Manufacturers of IOT sensors could do well to note this salient point.

Design focus is key to build a successful IOT Security Ecosystem

Since standardization is likely to be another major challenge to solve – as the underlying operational technologies will continue to operate in a status quo mode.  Implementation of security interfaces and wrappers to interconnect IT and OT will be a key challenge during IOT Security Ecosystem design.

Implementation and support of IOT Security Ecosystem is better when a component-level design and a closed-ecosystem approach is considered for roll out.  The stakeholders bring in legacy knowledge at the component level and that could come handy during design.   The main reason is the range of technologies and functions involved in implementing a complete IOT Security Ecosystem.  With advent of subject matter expertise in cloud, analytics, Internetworking and IP level security, this factor of an all-encompassing approach is key.

IOT has the potential to disrupt the lives of both enterprises and consumers.  However, one of the major factors that will determine the success of IOT ecosystems is security.  It only makes sense, therefore to look at the security aspect itself as a composite ecosystem.   IOT Security Ecosystems therefore will be a separate subject which will have its own evolution in the coming future.
